Ready to Stand Out on Social Media? Start Here

With billions of users across the world, social media can be an easy place for your organization to get lost in the noise. At the same time, it’s also a critical platform for building your message.

So, how do you carve out a space for your organization? Stand out from the crowd?

Here are a few ways to get started:

Meet your audience where they are.

TikTok may have millions of users, but are they the users you’re trying to reach?

Remember, you aren’t trying to reach every person on every platform. Instead of chasing the newest trend, take some time to really understand who should see your message. Then select the social networks where they gather.

Choosing the right networks will help you focus your energy in the right places. It will also help you determine what type of content you should be creating.

Paint the picture

You have only a few seconds to catch a user’s eye before they scroll past your post to the next one. How can you make sure they don’t just glaze over your post?

Videos and images are a good place to start. Creating short, shareable videos and easily-digestible social images can make all the difference when it comes to post engagement.

And don’t forget to tell your followers what they can do with your content. Trying to get people to send a letter, share a video or register for an event? Your visual can guide them to take action.

Make it human.

They call it social media for a reason. These platforms are fundamentally about connecting with other people, so show off the human side of your organization.

Posting a photo from an event or highlighting staff stories is a good way to start. Showcasing your organization’s stories can give a behind-the-scenes look at your employees and the people who you are trying to help.

Choose quality over quantity.

A smaller, engaged audience is worth more than a large, lukewarm audience of people who aren’t really interested in your posts. Take the time to build an engaged audience.

But beware: Drowning your audience in content is not necessarily the way to do this. Sometimes less is more, especially if it’s timely, compelling and high quality content. Tweeting dozens of times a day may work for some organizations, but it could be oversaturation for yours.
